SOME FAVORITE HYMNS 2

The Refuge

"A refuge for sinners the gospel makes known;
'Tis found in the merits of Jesus alone;
The weary, the tempted, and burdened by sin,
Were never exempted from entering therein.

"This refuge for sinners his love did ordain,
In Jesus the Lamb, from eternity slain;
And if God the spirit reveal this to you,
Take refuge in Jesus, though hell should pursue.

"The soul that shall enter in safety shall dwell;
There's no peradventure of sinking to hell;
The oath of Jehovah secures him from fear,
Nor shall the avenger of blood enter there.

"Here's refuge for sinners, whose guilt shall appear
As black as the confines of endless despair;
Who, stripped of all merit whereon to rely,
Are taught by the Spirit to Jesus to fly.

"Should conscience accuse us, as oft-times it may,
Here's blood that can take its defilement away.
In Jesus the Saviour, the sinner shall view
A city of refuge and righteousness too."

John Kent

Loose him, and let him go

"Till God the sinner's mind illume,
'Tis dark as night within;
Like Lazarus in the dreary tomb,
Bound hand and foot by sin.

"Yet though in massy fetters bound,
To God's free grace a foe,
The gospel has a joyful sould:
"Loose him, and let him go."

"Sinners shall hear this joyful sound,
When God designs it so;
Grace shall beyond their sins abound;
"Loose him, and let him go."

"Justice, beholding his attire,
No more appears his foe;
He says, "I've all that I require;
Loose him, and let him go."

"He stands accepted in his name
Whose blood for him did flow;
The holy law proclaims the same:
"Loose him, and let him go."

John Kent

And such were some of you

"Ye souls redeemed by Jesus' blood,
Salvation's theme pursue;
Exalt the sovereign grace of God,
For "such were some of you!"

"From head to foot defiled by sin,
Deep in rebellion too;
This awful state mankind are in,
"And such were some of you!"

"Whilst they are sinners dead to God,
Ye highly favoured few
Are washed from sin by Jesus' blood;
For "such were some of you!"

"As ye are chosen from the rest,
To grace the praise is due;
Be sovereign love for ever blest,
For "such were some of you!"

John Kent

Exulting in Eternal Union with Jesus

"'Twixt Jesus and the chosen race,
Subsists a bond of sovereign grace,
That hell, with its infernal train,
Shall ne'er dissolve nor rend in twain!

"This sacred bond shall never break,
Though earth should to her center shake;
Rest, doubting saint, assured of this,
For God has pledged his holiness.

"[He swore but once; the deed was done;
'Twas settled by the great Three-One;
Christ was appointed to redeem
All that his Father loved in him.]

"Hail, sacred union, firm and strong!
How great the grace! how sweet the song!
That worms of earth should ever be
One with incarnate Deity!

"[One in the tomb; one when he rose;
One when he triumphed o'er his foes;
One when in heaven he took his seat,
While seraphs sang all hell's defeat.]

"This sacred tie forbids their fears,
For all he is or has is theirs;
With him, their Head, they stand or fall--
Their Life, their Surety, and their All.

"[The sinner's Peace, the Daysman he,
Whose blood should set his people free;
On them his fond affections ran,
Before creation-work began.]

"Blest be the wisdom and the grace,
The eternal love and faithfulness,
That's in the gospel-plan revealed,
And is by God the Spirit sealed."

John Kent

JESUS, in condescending love

"JESUS, in condescending love,
Thus makes His grace appear;
He left the shining realms above
To be a Servant here.

"Though Lord of heav'n, He stoops to earth
To do His Father's will;
Poor and despised from His birth,
Yet Lord of glory still.

"Fatigue and suff'ring, toil an pain,
He, as a Servant, bore,
That all His Church might live and reign
With Him for evermore.

"He did the work none else could do,
Then He resum'd His throne,
Still keeping His designs in view,
And gath'ring in His own."

Joseph Irons

THE CROSS

"We sing the praise of him who died,
Of him who died upon the cross;
The sinner's Hope let men deride;
For this we count the world but dross.

"The cross, it takes our guilt away;
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day,
And sweetens every bitter cup.

"It makes the coward spirit brave,
And nerves the feeble arm for fight;
It takes its terror from the grave,
And gilds the bed of death with light.

"The balm of life, the cure of woe;
The measure and the pledge of love;
The sinner's refuge here below;
The angel's theme in heaven above."

T. Kelly

The Election of His Grace

"WHEN clouds around our Zion rise,
And mortals dare our Christ despise,
God's remnant is His special care,
Though peel'd and scatter'd here and there.

"They are th' election of His grace,
Though but a remnant of our race,
For ever dear to Jesus' heart,
And with them He will never part.

"The choice of His eternal love,
Shall reign with Jesus Christ above;
He calls and conquers them by grace,
And they shall see His lovely face."

Joseph Irons

The Church the Body of Christ

"The body, the church, ever stood
In Christ their mysterious Head;
To save them he shed his own blood,
And they from his fulness are fed.
A body united indeed;
Cemented together by love;
And richly supplied from its Head,
With blessings from heaven above.

"[Each joint is the care of the Lord,
And he will preserve it from hell;
His aid and his influence afford,
And so supply each member well.
When creatues to time bid adieu,
Each part shall appear in its place,
And live to eternity too,
Where Jesus unveileth his face.]

"The arm, and the eye and the breast,
Or members less comely to sight,
Shall ever be honoured and blest,
In glory's ineffable light.
No schism can ever take place;
'Tis built and supported by God;
A temple of infinite grace,
A mansion of immortal love."

William Gadsby

The Name of Jesus

"How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believers ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

"It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

"Dear Name! the rock on which I build;
My shield and hiding-place;
My never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace."

Anne Steele

The Beggar

"A limping beggar, clothed in rags;
Disgraceful and forlorn;
In self a mass of hateful dregs,
In Satan's image born;

"To Jesus comes, with all his woes,
And loud for mercy cries;
And mercy, like a river, flows
From Jesus' heart and eyes.

"He takes the rebel to his breast,
And, with a touch divine,
Heals him of all his wretchedness,
And makes his face to shine.

"Himself he binds by oath and blood,
To take the wretch to bliss;
Then gives his soul a glimpse of God,
And kills him with a kiss.

"Salvation unto God belongs!
Amen! we'll bless his name;
And when we have immortal tongues,
We'll still repeat the same."

William Gadsby

In his love...he redeemed them

"Jesus lived, and loved, and died,
Rose, and lives to intercede;
And with Zion on his breast,
He has said he'll ever rest.

"Long before this world was made,
Or that monster, Sin, appeared,
God was love, and loved the men
He designed to redeem.

"[Love constrained the Lamb to die,
For a wretch so vile as I;
Love, immensely great and free,
Christ has shown to worthless me.]

"Once I rolled in guilt and sin,
Heeded not a heart unclean;
But I now with wonder tell,
Jesus saved my soul from hell."

William Gadsby

Hoping on the Ground of Eternal Adoption

"Great Father of glory, how rich is thy grace!
What wonderful love is displayed in thy face!
In Jesus thy image with brightness we view,
And hope to be formed to that likeness anew.

"By favour adopted, thy sons we appear,
And led by thy Spirit, we boldly draw near;
In Jesus beloved, and washed in his blood,
With hope we adore at the footstool of God.

"The man who is blessed with hope in the cross,
Is freed from the bondage of guilt and the curse;
The blood of his Surety by faith he reviews,
While hope in that fountain his spirit renews.

"The world knows us not; but in this we rejoice,
To God we're no strangers, but objects of choice.
His love from eternity gave us a home,
While now we are hoping in safety to come.

"Arrayed in obedience, all wrought by the Lamb,
By Christ our Jehovah, the ancient I AM;
With boldness we journey, while Christ leads us on,
And hope soon in glory to praise the Three-One."

J. Stevens

The Saints More than Conquerors through Christ

"The conquest Jesus won
O'er Satan, sin, and hell,
With all the wonders he has done,
His saints shall sing and tell.

"On him shall Zion place
Her only hope for heaven,
And see, in his dear sacred face,
Ten thousand sins forgiven.

"He passed within the vail,
Did on his bosom bear
The worthless names that did prevail
With him to enter there.

"Worthy the slaughtered Lamb!
Let ransomed mortals say;
For who shall sing his lovely name
In higher notes than they?"

John Kent

God forbid that I should glory

"Redeemer! whither should I flee,
Or how escape the wrath to come?
The weary sinner flies to thee
For shelter from impending doom;
Smile on me, gracious Lord, and show
Thyself the Friend of sinners now.

"Beneath the shadow of thy cross
The heavy-laden soul finds rest;
I would esteem the world but dross,
So I might be of Christ possessed.
I'd seek my every joy in thee,
Be thou both life and light to me.

"Close to the ignominious tree,
Jesus, my humbled soul would cleave;
Despised and crucified with thee,
With thee resolved to die and live;
This prayer and this ambition mine,
Living and dying to be thine.

"There, fastened to the rugged wood
By holy love's resistless chain,
And life deriving from thy blood,
Never to wander wide again,
There may I bow my suppliant knee,
And own no other Lord but thee."

Augustus Toplady

I will not leave you comfortless

"O God of grace, of love immense,
How free thy favours to dispense!
I to thy mercy-seat repair,
Since thou hast said, "I'll meet thee there."

"Thou seest my soul by sin oppressed;
O come, and give the weary rest;
My base backslidings kindly heal,
Apply the balm, thy love reveal.

"Should I go mourning to the grave,
'Twere just; yet, Lord, from darkness save.
Does not thy tender word express,
'I will not leave you comfortless?'

"Burst through the clouds, O Source of Light!
Let joy succeed the weeping night;
Thy beams shall make my desert blow,
The fruit appear, the spices flow.

"What thou hast promised I implore,
Supplies from thy exhaustless store.
O righteous Father, just and true,
Give me both grace and glory too."

Gospel Magazine, 1777

To the Uttermost

"All-sufficient is our Jesus,
Though our sins are black as hell;
From pollution he can raise us,
Or from nature's deepest cell;
He on Calvary
Cancelled all his people's sin.

"Weeping saint, forget thy mourning;
Why cast down, or troubled so?
To the cross thy eyes be turning;
See what healing virtues flow;
Christ exalted,
Is the hope of Israel now."

John Kent

A Song or Praise to Christ

"Come, every gracious heart,
That loves the Saviour's name,
Your noblest powers exert,
To celebrate his fame;
Tell all who fear the Lord below,
The debt of love to him you owe.

"He left his starry crown,
And laid his robes aside,
On wings of love came down,
And wept, and bled, and died;
What he endured no tongue can tell,
To save our souls from death and hell.

"From the dark grave he rose,
The mansion of the dead;
And thence his mighty foes
In glorious triumph led;
Up through the sky the Conqueror rode,
And reigns on high, the Saviour, God.

"From thence he'll quickly come;
His chariots will not stay;
And bear our spirits home,
To realms of endless day.
There shall we see his lovely face,
And ever dwell in his embrace."

S. Stennett

In Jesus Combine all the riches of grace

"In Jesus combine all the riches of grace,
What glory and grandeur I see in his face;
Jehovah's eternal and co-equal Son,
Took all our transgressions and made them his own.

"Ye children of Zion, now dry up your tears;
For you the Redeemer in glory appears;
Now he lives, now he reigns, now he dwells in the sky,
To answer the needy whenever they cry.

"Afflicted believer, thy cause he'll maintain;
Though rough be thy way, he'll revive thee again;
In dark dispensations his kindness he'll prove,
And teach thee to prize his immutable love.

"What though thy corruptions are many and strong,
Thy gracious Redeemer will help thee along;
His promise assures thee, when troubles assail,
Though hell should oppose thee, thy faith cannot fail."

H. Fowler

The River makes glad the city of God

"While the dear saints of God below
Travel this vale of sin and woe,
There is a river through the road,
'Makes glad the city of our God.'

"This river is his heavenly love,
Proceeding from the throne above;
And all its streams which here are found,
With comfort, joy, and peace abound.

"Blest river! great its virtues are;
Pure river, O how sweet and clear!
Deep river, through the desert way;
Full river, never to decay!

"Ye thirsty, poor, and needy souls,
For you this wondrous river rolls,
Though sin and sorrow make you sad,
Yet drink, and let your hearts be glad.

"Drink, and for ever bless his name,
From whom these streams of mercy came:
Drink, for the fountain's open still;
Drink, for he says, "Whoever will."

S. Medley

Mighty To Save

"Mighty to save is Christ the Lamb;
Let all the saints adore his name,
And make his goodness known;
With one accord proclaim abroad,
The wonders of their Saviour, God,
Whose blood did once atone.

"Mighty to save! nor all sin's power
Can hold the sinner in that hour
When Jesus calls him home;
Nor Moses, with his iron rod,
Can keep the trembling soul from God,
When the set time is come.

"[Mighty to save! he saves from hell;
A mighty Saviour suits me well;
A helpless wretch am I;
With sin oppressed, by law condemned,
With neither feet nor legs to stand,
Nor wings from wrath to fly.]

"[Mighty to save! he saves from death;
O may I, with my latest breath,
His mighty power proclaim.
Ye sinners lost, and wretched too,
He came to save such worms as you,
And mighty is his name.]

"[Mighty to save! let Zion sing
The honours of her God and King,
Whose love no change can know.
With cheerful hearts, and cheerful voice,
We'll in the mighty God rejoice,
And sing his praise below.]

"And when the icy hand of death
Shall steal away our mortal breath,
Our joy shall still increase;
Yes, with a loud immortal tongue,
We'll sing, and Christ shall be our song,
In realms of endless peace."

William Gadsby

Streams of living water flow

"See, from Zion's sacred mountain,
Streams of living water flow;
God has opened there a fountain,
That supplies the plains below;
They are blessed
Who its sovereign virtues know.

"Through ten thousand channels flowing,
Streams of mercy find their way;
Life, and health, and joy bestowing,
Making all around look gay;
O believer!
All thy sins are washed away.

"Gladdened by the flowing treasure,
All enriching as it goes;
Lo, the desert smiles with pleasure,
Buds and blossoms as the rose;
Every sinner
Sings for joy where'er it flows.

"Trees of life the banks adorning,
Yield their fruit to all around,
Those who eat are saved from mourning;
Pleasure comes and hopes abound;
Fair their portion!
Endless life with glory crowned."

T. Kelly

Praise to the Redeemer

"Dear Lord! my panting soul inflame,
To spread abroad thy matchless fame,
And with a solemn pleasure tell,
The grace which saves from death and hell.

"Here's pardon full for sin that's past;
It matters not how black their cast;
And O my soul, with wonder view,
For sins to come here's pardon too.

"The nation, thus redeemed from sin,
Was chosen, loved, and blessed in him;
They ne'er shall die while Jesus lives;
His covenant life eternal gives.

"Let saints prepare to crown his brow
With bright immortal trophies now;
And let their songs record his name,
His honours, and his deathless fame."

John Kent

Praise for Reigning Grace

"Hark! how the blood-bought hosts above
Conspire to praise redeeming love,
In sweet harmonious strains;
And while they strike the golden lyres,
The glorious theme each bosom fires,
That grace triumphant reigns.

"Join thou, my soul, for thou canst tell
How grace divine broke up thy cell,
And loosed thy native chains;
And still, from that auspicious day,
How oft art thou constrained to say,
That grace triumphant reigns.

"[Grace, till the tribes redeemed by blood,
Are brought to know themselves and God,
Her empire shall maintain;
To call when he appoints the day,
And from the mighty take the prey,
Shall grace triumphant reign.]

"When called to meet the King of dread,
Should love compose my dying bed,
And grace my soul sustain,
Then, ere I quit this mortal clay,
I'll raise my fainting voice, and say,
Let grace triumphant reign."

John Kent

Thou only Sovereign of my heart

"Thou only Sovereign of my heart,
My Refuge, my Almighty Friend;
And can my soul from thee depart,
On whom alone my hopes depend?

"Whither, ah! whither should I go,
A wretched wanderer from the Lord?
Can this dark world of sin and woe
One glimpse of happiness afford?

"Eternal life thy words impart;
On these my fainting spirit lives;
Here sweeter comforts cheer my heart,
Than all the round that nature gives.

"Let earth's alluring joys combine,
While thou art near, in vain they call;
One smile, one blissful smile of thine,
Thou dearest Lord, outweighs them all.

"Thy name my inmost powers adore,
Thou art my life, my joy, my care;
Depart from thee?--'tis death--'tis more;
'Tis endless ruin, deep despair!

"Low at thy feet my soul would lie;
Here safety dwells and peace divine;
Still let me live beneath thy eye,
For life, eternal life, is thine."

Anne Steele

The Debt was fully Paid

"He gave me back the bond;
It was a heavy debt;
And as he gave, he smiled, and said,
Thou wilt not me forget.

"He gave me back the bond;
The seal was torn away,

"And as he gave, he smiled, and said,
Think thou of me alway.

"That bond I still will keep,
Although it cancelled be;
It tells me what I owe to him
Who paid the debt for me.

"I look on it and smile;
I look again, and weep;
This record of his love to me
For ever I will keep.

"A bond it is no more;
But it shall ever tell,
That all I owed was fully paid
By my Emmanuel."

This man shall be the peace

"Peace by his cross has Jesus made;
The church's everlasting Head
O'er hell and sin has victory won,
And, with a shout, to glory gone.

"When o'er thy head the billows roll,
And shades of sin obscure thy soul;
When thou canst no deliverance see,
Yet still this Man thy peace shall be.

"In tribulation's thorny maze
Or on the mount of sovereign grace,
Or in the fire, or through the sea,
This glorious Man thy Peace shall be.

"Yea, when thy eye of faith is dim,
Rest thou on Jesus, sink or swim,
And at his footstool bow the knee,
For Israel's God thy Peace shall be."

John Kent

An object of eternal love

"AMAZING grace! a worm of earth
Ennobled by a second birth,
And own'd Jehovah's child!
An object of eternal love--
An heir to all the joys above
Who cannot be exiled.

"Come, heaven-born soul, your sonship view
The grace which forms your heart anew,
Calls forth the filial claim;
My Father, doubtless Thou art mine,
For Thou hast given me life Divine,
And I must own Thy name.

"My Father, O, delightful sound!
I'm with paternal kindness crown'd,
By God my Father's hand:
O, how I long to love Him more,
Obey Him, trust Him, and adore,
Till near His throne I stand.

"My Father, draw my heart away
From earth, and sin, and self, I pray,
Let me Thine image bear:
Feed, clothe, and teach me every day.
Till I arrive at home, and say
Thou art my Father there."

Joseph Irons

Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem

"Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem,
Cleave the skies with shouts of praise;
Sing to him who found the ransom,
Ancient of eternal days,
God of God, the Word incarnate,
Whom the heaven of heaven obeys.

"Ere he raised the lofty mountains,
Formed of the seas, or built the sky,
Love eternal, free and boundless,
Moved the Lord of life to die,
Foreordained the Prince of princes
For the throne of Calvary.

"There, for us and our redemption,
See him for all his lifeblood pour,
There he wins our full salvation,
Dies that we may die no more;
Then, arising, lives for ever,
Reigning where he was before.

"High on yon celestial mountains
Stands his gem-built throne, all bright,
Midst unending alleluias
Bursting from the sons of light;
Zion's people tell his praises,
Victor after hard-won fight.

"Yet this earth he still remembers,
Still be him the flock are fed;
Yea, he gives them food immortal,
Gives himself, the living Bread;
Leads them where the precious fountain
From the smitten rock is shed.

"Trust him then, ye fainting pilgrims;
Who shall pluck you from his hand?
Pledged he stands for your salvation,
Pledged to give the promised land,
Where among the ransomed nations
Ye around his throne shall stand.

Laud and honor to the Father,
Laud and honor to the Son,
Laud and honor to the Spirit,
Ever Three and ever One,
Consubstantial, co-eternal,
While unending ages run."

Job Hupton

"Hark! the voice of love and mercy

"Hark! the voice of love and mercy,
Sounds aloud from Calvary;
See, it rends the rocks asunder,
Shakes the earth, and veils the sky.
It is finished,
Hear the dying Saviour cry!

"Finished all the types and shadows
Of the ceremonial law;
Finished all that God had promised,
Death and hell no more shall awe:
It is finished,
Saints, from hence your comforts draw.

"Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs,
Join to sing the pleasing theme;
Saints on earth, and all in heaven,
Join to praise Immanuel's name
Hallelujah!
Glory to the bleeding Lamb."

O Israel, who is like to thee

"O ISRAEL, who is like to thee,
A people saved, and called to be
Peculiar to the Lord?
Thy Shield! He guards thee from the foe;
Thy Sword! He fights thy battles too--
Himself thy Great Reward.

"Fear not, though many should oppose,
For God is stronger than thy foes,
And makes thy cause His own;
The Promised Land before thee lie--
Go, and possess the wondrous prize,
Reserved for thee alone.

"Thy toils have almost reached a close,
And thou art destined to repose
Within you glorious land;
E'en now its rising hills are seen,
Enriched with everlasting green,
Where Israel soon shall stand.

"In glory there the King appears;
He wipes away His people's tears,
And makes their sorrows cease;
From toil and strife they there repose,
And dwell secure from all their foes,
In everlasting peace."

A Hymn of Praise

"How shall our infant tongues express
To God a hymn of praise,
Who gave us being, and whose grace
Preserves our infant days?

"Though richly He that grace bestows,
Yet blind and dark are we;
For though in constant streams it flows,
That grace we rarely see.

"Nor till the sovereign Lord above
His saving might displays,
Will anything the veil remove,
Or bow us to His ways.

"Jesus, the Saviour, can remove
This covering from the heart;
And by His mercy from above
True light and life impart.

"Then we can sing of that rich grace
The mighty God displays
To us so ruined, vile, and base,
And hymn a song of praise."

Joseph Orton

Look on Him--my Surety!

"Not on me, Lord, not on me,--
I am all iniquity;
Look upon that Holy One,
Who, before Thy glorious throne,
On his breast bears my poor name,
And my load of sin and shame,--
Look on Him--my Surety!

"Look on thine anointed Son;
Only in His name I come;
Only for His sake I dare
Breathe to Thee my earnest pray'r;
While I to His garment cling,
While I hide beneath His wing,
Look on Him--my Surety!

"I have often broke Thy laws,
Oft prov'd traitor to thy cause;
He that broken law hath kept,
He o'er my transgressions wept;
He, upon the cross for me,
Bore the dread death-penalty.
Look on Him--my Surety!

"Now He pleadeth Thee before,
And I kneel, Lord, to adore,
For the pardon Thou hast giv'n,
For the death chains He has riv'n;
Even when I sue for grace,
Look thou on His pity'ng face;
Look on Him--my Surety!"

Matchless Grace

"Great are the mercies God bestows
On this our highly-favoured land;
In streams of grace that mercy flows
Freely from His all-bounteous hand.

"Why God bestows such matchless grace,
Which we His creatures here enjoy,
No cause is found in man's lost race--
The fountain is in God most high.

"What thanks we owe for that great love
Which gave the Word of truth and grace,
To lead us to the fount above,
And teach us how to seek His face.

"In that bless'd book a sacred light
Shines to direct our footsteps here;
A lamp that's safe, and sure, and bright,
Which both in life and death can cheer.

"In life, it teaches how to live;
In sickness, how its pains to bear;
In death, how Jesus died to give
The victory over every fear.

"May this sure guide our study be,
While life and health to us are given;
And, searching that sure record, see
The way that leads from earth to heaven."

Joseph Orton

But ye are Come to Mount Zion

"Ye sons of God, be wise,
And learn your Father's will;
By faith lift up your eyes
To yonder shining hill;
No smoke, no thunderbolts are there,
Nor wrath to sink you in despair.

"[A pleasant mount indeed,
Where God unfolds his grace
To all the chosen seed,
And, with a smiling face,
Speaks peace to every troubled breast,
And bids the weary in him rest.]

"To worship on this ground,
Is not a legal task;
A solid peace is found,
And faith has all it asks;
There Jesus sits with smiling face,
And rules and reigns the God of grace."

William Gadsby
