"Is all the names my Saviour wears,
In all the characters He bears,
His everlasting glories shine,
And faith exclaims that God is mine.
"He is the Root, conceal'd from view,
On which is a full salvation grew,
With all the fruits of cov'nant love,
Of grace below, and bliss above.
"He is the Root, despis'd of men,
As without comeliness, and mean;
But precious to His ransom'd throng,
Their hidden life, their daily song.
"O may my soul in Him be found.
Then shall my fruitfulness abound;
And since my Root can never die,
I shall for ever live on high."
"IMMORTAL honours rest on Jesus's head,
My God, my portion, and my living head;
In him I live, upon him cast my care;
He saves from death, destruction, and despair.
"He is my refuge in each deep distress,
The Lord my strength, and glorious righteousness;
Through floods and flames, he leads me safely on,
And daily makes his sov'reign goodness known.
"My every need he richly will supply,
Nor will his mercy ever let me die;
In him there dwells a treasure all divine,
And matchless grace has made that treasure mine.
"O that my soul could love and praise him more,
His beauties trace, his majesty adore,
Live near his heart, upon his bosom lean,
Obey his voice, and all his will esteem."
" Lamb of GOD, we fall before Thee,
Humbly trusting
in Thy Cross;
That alone be all our glory,
All things else are dung
and dross;
Thee we own a perfect Saviour,
Only source of all
that is good;
Every grace and every favour,
Comes to us through
Jesus' blood.
Jesus gives us true repentance
By His Spirit
sent from heaven;
" Jesus whispers this sweet sentence,
Son, thy
sins are all forgiven;
Faith He gives us to believe it,
Grateful hearts
His love to prize;
Want we wisdom? He must give it,
Hearing ears,
and see eyes.
When we live on Jesus' merit,
Then we worship
GOD aright;
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Then we savingly unite;"
"A Debtor to Jehovah's law,
My soul by nature stood;
And Justice was about to draw
His sword, to shed my blood.
"Sinner, stand forth," He sternly cried,
'And pay me what you owe:'
'"Tis done," said Jesus, for I died:
Loose him, and let him go.
"I am his Surety, I, the Lord:
Behold my wounded side,"
He spake, and Justice dropp'd his sword,
And said, "I'm satisfied."
"When first I heard my Surety's voice,
Engaging for my sake,
It made my fainting heart rejoice,
And bade my songs awake.
"Dear Surety, deign to take the praise
Of grace, and love so vast;
Be thou my Surety all my days,
And clear my soul at last."
"Sovereign grace o’er sin abounding!
Ransomed souls, the tidings swell;
’Tis a deep that knows no sounding;
Who its breadth or length can tell?
On its glories,
Let my soul for ever dwell.
"What from Christ that soul can sever,
Bound by everlasting bands?
Once in Him, in Him for ever;
Thus the eternal covenant stands.
None shall take Thee
From the Strength of Israel’s hands.
"Heirs of God, joint-heirs with Jesus,
Long ere time its race begun;
To His name eternal praises;
O what wonders love has done!
One with Jesus,
By eternal union one.
"On such love, my soul, still ponder,
Love so great, so rich, so free;
Say, while lost in holy wonder,
Why, O Lord, such love to me?
Hallelujah!
Grace shall reign
"Tag: Hallelujah!
Grace shall reign
Hallelujah!
Grace shall reign eternally."
"Blessed be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like that to that above.
"Before our Father's throne
We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one
Our comforts and our cares.
"We share each other's woes,
Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.
"When we asunder part,
It gives us inward pain;
But we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again.
"This glorious hope revives
Our courage by the way;
While each in expectation lives,
And longs to see the day.
"From sorrow, toil and pain,
And sin, we shall be free,
And perfect love and friendship reign
Through all eternity."
"The love of Christ is rich and free;
Fixed on His own eternally;
Nor earth, nor hell, can it remove;
Long as He lives, His own He’ll love.
"His loving heart engaged to be
Their everlasting Surety;
’Twas love that took their cause in hand,
And love maintains it to the end.
"Chorus: Love cannot from its post withdraw;
Nor death, nor hell, nor sin, nor law,
Can turn the Surety’s heart away;
He’ll love His own to endless day.
"Love has redeemed His sheep with blood;
And love will bring them safe to God;
Love calls them all from death to life;
And love will finish all their strife.
"He loves through every changing scene,
Nor aught from Him can Zion wean;
Not all the wanderings of her heart
Can make His love for her depart.
"At death, beyond the grave, He’ll love;
In endless bliss, His own shall prove
The blazing glory of that love
Which never could from them remove."
"You children of God,
by faith in His Son
Redeemed by His blood,
and with Him made one
This union with wonder
and rapture be seen
Which nothing shall sunder,
without or within.
"This pardon, this peace
which none can destroy
This treasure of grace
and heavenly joy
The worthless may crave it,
it always comes free
The vilest may have it,
it was given to me.
"Chorus: Free grace has paid for all my sin
Free grace, though it cost so much to Him
Free grace has freed even my will
Free grace to the end sustains me still.
"It's not for good deeds,
good tempers nor frames
From grace it proceeds,
and all is the Lamb's
No goodness, no fitness
expects He from us
This I can well witness,
for none could be worse.
"Bridge: Sick sinner, expect no
balm but Christ's blood
Your own works reject,
the bad and the good
None ever regret it that on Him rely
Though guilty as Saul or Jonah or I."
"A debtor to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing;
Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on,
My person and offering to bring.
The terrors of law and of God
With me can have nothing to do;
My Savior's obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.
"The work which His goodness began,
The arm of His strength will complete;
His promise is yea and amen,
And never was forfeited yet.
Things future, nor things that are now,
Not all things below nor above
Can make Him His purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from His love.
"My name from the palms of His hands
Eternity will not erase;
Impressed on His heart it remains
In marks of indelible grace.
Yes, I to the end shall endure,
As sure as the earnest is given
More happy, but not more secure,
The glorified spirits in heaven."
"Father, my soul delights to trace,
In my Redeemer's glorious face,
Thy lovingkindess, rich and free,
From everlasting fix'd on me.
"This is the source of all my joy,
Which hell and sin can ne'er destroy;
In life, and death, my soul shall sing,
The lovingkindness of my King.
"I'm number'd with the chosen race--
I'm justified, and sav'd by grace--
Yea, own'd by Christ, an heir of bliss--
What wondrous lovingkindness this!
"'Tis better, far, than life to me,
It binds me to th' eternal Three;
And when this mortal life is o'er,
Thy lovingkindness I' ll adore.
"Till then, my soul shall daily rest,
Upon my dear Redeemer's breast,
And view, in His atoning blood,
The lovingkindness of my God."
"Rock of ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
"Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone,
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
"Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress,
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die.
"Whilst I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyestrings break in death;
When I soar through tracts unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee."
"How can ye hope, deluded souls,
To see, what none e'er saw,
Salvation by the works obtained
Of Sinai's fiery law?
"There ye may toil, and weep, and fast,
And vex your heart with pain;
And when ye've ended, find at last
That all your toil was vain.
"That law but makes your guilt abound;
Sad help! and (what is worst),
All souls that under that are found,
By God Himself are cursed.
"This curse pertains to those who break
One precept, e'er so small,
And where's the man, in thought or deed,
That has not broken all?
"Fly then, awakened sinners, fly;
Your case admits no stay:
The fountain's opened now for sin;
Come, wash your guilt away.
"See how from Jesus' wounded side
The water flows, and blood;
If you but touch that purple tide,
You make your peace with God.
"Only by faith in Jesus' wounds
The sinner gets release:
No other sacrifice for sin
Will God accept but this."
"Mercy speaks by Jesus’ blood;
Hear and sing, ye sons of God;
Justice satisfied indeed;
Christ has full atonement made.
"Jesus’ blood speaks loud and sweet;
Here all Deity can meet,
And, without a jarring voice,
Welcome Zion to rejoice,
Welcome Zion to rejoice.
"Chorus: "All her debts were cast on Me,
And she must and shall go free.
All her debts were cast on Me,
And she must and shall go free."
"Peace of conscience, peace with God,
We obtain through Jesus’ blood;
Jesus’ blood speaks solid rest;
We believe, and we are blest.
We believe, and we are blest.
"Bridge: Should the law against her roar,
Jesus’ blood still speaks with power,
"All her debts were cast on Me,
And she must and shall go free.
She must and shall go free."
"Tag:"And she must and shall go free,
And she must and shall go free,
And she must and shall go free."
"Chorus: O Love incomprehensible
That made Thee bleed for me
The Judge of all has suffered death
To set His prisoner free.
"What pain what soul-oppressing pain
The Great Redeemer bore
While bloody sweat like drops of rain
Distilled from every pore!
"Arraigned at Pilate’s shameful bar,
Unparalleled disgrace!
See spotless innocence appear
In guilt’s detested place.
"The spotless Savior lived for me,
And died upon the mount
The obedience of His life and death,
Is placed to my account!
"’Tis finished!" now aloud He cries,
No more the Law requires
And now, amazing sacrifice,
The Lord of Life expires!
"On Thee alone my hope relies,
Beneath Thy cross I fall
My Lord, my Life, my Sacrifice,
My Savior and my All!"
"'Twas with an everlasting love.
That God his own elect embraced
Before he made the worlds above,
Or earth on her huge columns placed.
"Long ere the sun's refulgent ray
Primeval shades of darkness drove,
They on his sacred bosom lay,
Loved with an everlasting love.
"Then, in His love and His decrees,
Christ and His bride appeared as one,
Her sin, by imputation His,
Whilst she in spotless splendor shone.
"Believer, here thy comfort stands,
From first to last salvation's free;
And everlasting love demands
An everlasting song from thee."
"In Union with the Lamb,
From condemnation free
The saints from everlasting were
And shall forever be.
"In cov'nant from old.
The sons of God they were
The feelest lamb in Jesus' fold
Was blessed in Jesus there.
"Its bonds shall never break
Though earth's old columns bow
The stong, the tempted, and the weak
Are one in Jesus now.
"With joy lift up your heads
Ye highly favored few
When through the earth destruction spreads
For what shall injure you?
"When storms or tempests rise,
Or sins your peace assail,
Your hope in Jesus never dies
'T is cast within the vail.
"Here let the weary rest
Who love the Savior's name;
Though with no sweet enjoyment blest
This cov'nant stands the same."
"The Voice of the Shepherd His Flock Shall Convene
And lead them to pastures all fertile and green
But unto the stranger they will not draw near,
Who calls to deceive them, "Lo here and lo there."
"The blood of the Shepherd His flock did redeem;
Grace, mercy, and peace came to sinners by Him;
'Tis He who hath told them of such to beware,
Who cry like deceivers, "Lo here, and lo there."
"He calls them by name, and before them He goes,
To guide, guard, and succor His lambs from their foes;
And, glory to Jesus, His church is His care,
Though oft they do halt 'twixt "Lo here, and lo there."
"The Scriptures declare that deceivers shall come,
And thousands to final destruction shall run;
But saints by their calling shall still persevere,
While hirelings are bawling, "Lo here, and lo there."
"The way to the Father is Jesus the Son,
In all that He suffered, in all that He's done;
And this shall the heralds of Jesus declare,
Till folded in Zion His sheep shall appear.
"SALVATION in Christ, for a poor guilty race,
Contrived by wisdom--accomplish'd by grace;
The gift of my Father--the purchase of blood,
Imparts all my comfort, and honours my God.
"Salvation reveal'd, just suiting my state,
Complete in its nature--eternal in date;
Election, Redemption, and Glory I sing,
The purpose, the gift, and the work of my King.
"Salvation bestow'd, without money or price,
The poorest and vilest herein may rejoice;
For pardon, acceptance, and life are so free,
They come to Manassah, and Mary, and me.
"Salvation! on, joyful, heart-gladdening sound,
The Church is redeem'd, and Jesus is crown'd;
Ye heralds proclaim it to Adam's lost race,
Salvation, of free and unmerited grace!"
"Self-Righteous Souls on Works Rely.
And boast their moral dignity;
But if I lisp a song of praise,
Each note shall echo, Grace, free grace.
"'Twas grace that quickened me when dead;
'Twas grace my soul to Jesus led;
Grace brings a sense of pardoned sin.
And grace subdues my lusts within.
"Grace reconciles to ev'ry loss,
And sweetens ev'ry painful cross
Defends my soul when danger's near;
By grace alone I persevere.
"When from this world my soul removes
To mansions of delight and love,
I'll cast my crown before His throne,
And shout, Free grace, free grace alone."
"Is then the law of God untrue,
Which He by Moses gave?
No: but to take it in this view
That it has power to save.
"Legal obedience were complete,
Could we the law fulfil:
But no man ever did so yet;
And no man ever will.
"The law was never meant to give
New strength to man's lost race;
We cannot act before we live,
And life proceeds from grace.
"But grace and truth by Christ are given,
To Him must Moses bow;
Grace fits the new-born soul for heaven,
And truth informs us how.
"By Christ we enter into rest,
And triumph o'er the fall;
Whoe'er would be completely blest,
Must trust to Christ for all."
"All fulness resides in Jesus our head,
And ever abides to answer our need;
The Father's good pleasure has laid up in store
A plentiful treasure to give to the poor.
"Whate'er be our wants, we need not to fear,
Our numerous complaints His mercy will hear;
His fulness shall yield us abundant supplies,
His power shall shield us when dangers arise.
"The fountain o'erflows: our woes to redress,
Still more He bestows, and grace upon grace,
His gifts in abundance we daily receive;
He has a redundance for all that believe.
"Whatever distress awaits us below,
Such plentiful grace will Jesus bestow
As still shall support and silence our fear;
For nothing can hurt us while Jesus is near.
"When troubles attend, or danger, or strife.
His love will defend and guard us thro' life;
And when we are fainting and ready to die,
Whatever is wanting His grace will supply."
"CALL'D by grace, the sinner see,
Rich though sunk in poverty;
Rich in faith that God has given,
He's a legal heir of heaven.
"All the searchless riches stored
In the Person of our Lord;
Wisdom, truth, and glorious grace,
Everlasting love and peace.
"All things that the cross procur'd
Stand eternally secur'd;
All are yours, ye heirs of bliss,
Cancell'd sins and righteousness.
"All the promises we trace
In the records of His grace.
Richer far than mines of gold,
Half their wealth was never told.
"Victory o'er the King of Dread,
Strength the gloomy vale to tread,
Faith within the veil to see
Jesus enter'd there for thee.
"All the bliss that seraphs know,
All the love that God can show,
All are yours, ye favor'd few,
Mansions, thrones, and kingdoms too."
"Jehovah bids His heralds go.
The blessed Gospel trumpet blow;
And Israel's outcasts, dead in sin,
By sovereign grace are gathered in.
"The dear Redeemer knows His own,
Views them with pleasure from His throne;
And gathers all His chosen band,
Of every tribe, from every land.
"Though lost and ruin'd, lame and blind,
He leaves not one of them behind;
They cost no less than precious blood;
And He will bring them home to God.
"The Father sent Him forth to save,
All that in covenant He gave;
Responsible for every soul,
He gathers in and saves the whole."
"There is a period known to God,
When all His sheep, redeemed by blood,
Shall leave the hateful ways of sin,
Turn to the fold and enter in.
"At peace with hell, with God at war,
In sin's dark maze they wander far,
Indulge their lust, and still go on
As far from God as sheep can run.
"When Wisdom calls, they stop their ear,
And headlong urge their mad career;
Judgments nor mercies e'er can sway
Their roving feet to Wisdom's way.
"Glory to God, they ne'er shall rove
Beyond the limits of His love;
Fenced with Jehovah's shalls and wills,
Firm as the everlasting hills.
"The appointed time rolls on apace,
Not to propose, but call by grace;
Give a new heart, renew the will,
And turn the feet to Zion's hill."
"Before the day star knew its place,
Or planets went their round,
The church in bonds of sov'reign grace,
Was one with Jesus found.
"In all that Jesus did on earth,
His church an int'rest have;
Go, trace him from his humble birth
Down to the silent grave.
"'Twas for his saints he tasted death;
All glory to his name!
And when he yeilded up his breath,
With Him, his saints o'ercame.
"With Him His members on the tree
Fulfilled the law's demands;
'Tis, "I in them, and they in me,"
For thus the union stands.
"Since Jesus slept among the dead,
His saints have naught to fear;
For with their gracious, suff'ring Head,
His members sojourned there.
"When from the tomb we see him rise,
Triumphant o'er his foes
e bore his members to the skies,
And with him they arose.
"Ye saints, this union can't disolve,
By which all things are yours,
Long as eternal years revolve,
Or Deity endures."
"A Form of words, though e'er so sound,
Can never save a soul;
The Holy Ghost must give the wound,
And make the wounded whole.
"Though God's election is a truth,
Small comfort there I see,
Till I am told by God's own mouth
That He has chosen me.
"Sinners, I read, are justified
By faith in Jesus' blood:
But when to me that blood's applied,
'Tis then it does me good.
"To perseverance I agree;
The thing to me is clear,
Because the Lord has promised me
That I shall persevere.
"Imputed righteousness I own
A doctrine most divine,
For Jesus to my heart makes known
That all His merit's mine.
"That Christ is God I can acouch,
And for His people cares,
Since I have prayed to Him as such,
And He has heard my prayers.
"That sinners black as hell, by Christ
Are saved, I know full well,
For I His mercy have not missed,
And I am black as hell.
"Thus Christians glorify the Lord;
His Spirit joins with ours,
In bearing witness to His word,
With all its saving powers."
"Lord, dismiss us with thy blessing;
Fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let each heart thy love possessing
Triumph in redeeming grace;
O refresh us! O refresh us!
Traveling through this wilderness.
"Thanks we give, and adoration
For thy gospel's joyful sound;
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound;
May thy presence, May thy presence
With us evermore be found.
"So, whene'er the signal's given,
Us from earth to call away,
Borne on angel's wings to heaven,
Glad to leave our cumb'rous clay,
May we ready, may we ready
Rise and reign in endless day."
"God, in the riches of His grace,
Did from eternity ordain
A seed elect of Adam's race,
Eternal glory should obtain.
"God, in the riches of his grace,
Hath Christ exalted over all;
His goings forth, of old we trace
The sinner's Surety in the fall.
"God, in the riches of his grace,
Hath Abra'm's seed exalted high;
While His redeemed shall see His face,
And reign with Him above the sky.
"God, in the riches of His Grace,
Hath ot the charge of Jesus laid
The sin of all that chosen race,
Whose debt of suff'ring Jesus paid.
"God, in the riches of His Grace,
Hath, in the gospel, Christ displayed,
Whose blood hath sealed the sinner's peace,
And bruised the venomed serpent's head.
"God, in the riches of His Grace,
We'll to eternity adore;
And wonders still on wonders trace,
But ne'er his depth of love explore."
"What various names JEHOVAH bears!
What various forms His kindness wears!
But none so much my heart expands
As when He as my Father stands.
"Is God my Father? He'll instruct,
And all my child-like steps conduct;
And when I sin I must expect
He'll with a Father's hand correct.
"Is God my Father? All my care
I'll bring to Him, and leave it there;
His wisdom and His love I'll trust,
In sorrows and in straits the worst.
"Is God my Father? Then His love
Is fix'd on me, nor can remove;
And since He owns me as His child,
I can't be from His face exiled.
"God, as my Father, does engage
To give me heaven, when I'm of age;
To Him, my Portion, I shall come;
My Father's dwelling is my home."
"Lord, the conflict grows severer
Yet I cannot quit the field:
Gracious Captain, be Thou nearer,
Teach me how Thy sword to wield;
By Thy Spirit
All my inbred foes shall yield.
"Earth and hell are now uniting
To obstruct my journey home;
Thus I'm call'd to daily fighting,
O, let Thy salvation come;
By Thy Spirit
I shall more than overcome.
"Thou hast all my armour given;
Thou hast placed my crown in view;
All my strength must come from heaven,
While such potent foes pursue;
By Thy Spirit
I shall every sin subdue.
"Though surrounded with temptation,
And a trait'rous host annoy;
Yet the Captain of salvation
Will His foes and mine destroy;
By His Spirit
I shall gain the Victor's joy."
"Join, every tongue, to sing
The mercies of the Lord;
The love of Christ, our King,
Let every heart record.
He saved us from the wrath of God,
And paid our ransom with His blood.
"What wondrous grace was this!
We sinned, and Jesus died;
He wrought the righteousness,
And we are justified.
We ran the debt to lengths extreme,
And all our debt was charged on Him.
Hell was our just desert,
And He that hell endured;
Guilt broke His guiltless heart
With wrath that we incurred;
We bruised His body, spilt His blood,
And both became our heav'nly food."
"Your harps, ye trembling saints,
Down from the willows take,
Loud to the praise of Christ our Lord,
Bid ev'ry string awake.
"Though in a foreign land,
We are not far from home;
And nearer to our house above
We ev'ry moment come.
"His grave shall to the end
Stronger and brighter shine;
Nor present things, nor things to come,
Shall quench the spark divine.
"The time of love will come,
When we shall clearly see,
Not only that he shed his blood,
But each shall say, "For me."
"Tarry his leisure then,---
Wait the appointed hour;
Wait till the Bridegroom of your souls
Reveal his love with power.
"Blest is the man, O God
That stays himself on thee;
Who waits for thy salvation, Lord,
Shall thy salvation see."
"Suffering Saviour, Lamb of God,
How hath Thou been used!
With the Almighty's wrathful rod,
Soul and body bruised!
"We, for whom Thou once wast slain;
We, whose sins did pierce Thee!
Now commemorate Thy pain,
And implore Thy mercy.
"We would with Thee sympathise,
In Thy bitter passion;
With soft hearts and weeping eyes,
See Thy great salvation.
"Thine's an everlasting love;
We have dearly tried Thee;
Whom have we in heaven above,
Whom on earth beside Thee?
"What can helpless sinners do,
When temptations seize us?
Nought have we to look unto,
But the blood of Jesus.
"Pardon all our baseness, Lord,
All our weakness pity;
Guide us safely by Thy word,
To the heavenly city.
"Oh! sustain us on the road
Through this desert dreary;
Feed us with Thy flesh and blood,
When we're faint and weary.
"Bid us call to mind Thy cross,
Our hard hearts to soften;
Often, Saviour, feast us thus,
For we need it often.
"DEEP in the everlasting mind
The great mysterious purpose lay,
Of choosing some from lost mankind,
Whose sins the Lamb should bear away.
"Them, loved with an eternal love,
To grace and glory he ordained;
Gave them a throne which cannot move,
And chose them both to means and end.
"In these he was resolved to make
The riches of his goodness known;
These he accepts for Jesus' sake,
And views them righteous in his Son.
"No goodness God foresaw in his,
But what his grace decreed to give;
No comeliness in them there is
Which they did not from him receive.
"Faith and repentance he bestows
On such as he designs to save;
From him their soul's obedience flows
And he shall all the glory have."
"O LOVE, beyond conception great,
That formed the vast stupendous plan,
Where all divine perfections meet,
To reconcile rebellious man.
"There wisdom shines in fullest blaze
And justice all her rights maintains;
Astonished angels stoop to gaze,
While mercy o'er the guilty reigns.
"Yes, mercy reigns, and justice too;
In Christ they both harmonious meet;
He paid to justice all its due,
And now he fills the mercy-seat.
"Such are the wonders of our God,
And the amazing depths of grace,
To save from wrath's vindictive rod,
The chosen sons of Adam's race."
"When overwhelmed with doubts and fear,
Great God, do Thou my spirit cheer;
Let not mine eyes with tears be fed,
But to the Rock of Ages led.
"When storms of sin and sorrow beat,
Lead me to this Divine retreat:
Thy perfect righteousness and blood,
My Rock, my Fortress and my God.
"When sick, or faint, or sore dismayed,
Then let my hopes on Thee be stayed;
Thy summit rising to the skies,
Can shield my head when dangers rise.
"When guilt lies heavy on my soul,
And waves of fierce temptation roll,
I'll to the Rock for shelter flee,
And take my refuge, Lord, in Thee.
"When called the vale of Death to tread,
Then to this Rock may I be led;
Nor fear to cross that gloomy sea,
Since Thou hast tasted death for me."
"JEHOVAH has said, 'tis left on record,
"The righteous are one with Jesus the Lord;"
At all times he loves them; 'twas for them he died;
Yet ofttimes he proves them, for grace must be tried.
"When faint in the way, or lifeless and cold,
Or sunk in dismay, and none to uphold;
Yet firm to his promise thy God shall abide;
But grace, tho' the smallest, shall surely be tried.
"Temptations and sins in legions shall rise,
As spears in thy side or thorns in thy eyes;
And oft, to thy sorrow, his face he shall hide,
For God has determined his grace shall be tried.
"With him on the mount to-day thou shalt be,
Indulged by thy Lord his glory to see;
There he may caress thee, & call thee his bride,
Yet grace, tho' he bless thee, shall surely be tried.
"The tempest shall blow, the billows shall swell,
Thy soul, full of woe, shall pass as thro' hell;
And all this to prove thee, to stain thy curs'd pride;
Yet still he will love thee; but grace must be tried.
"He'll ne'er thee forsake, but surely perform
His word, tho' he take his way in the storm;
Yea, oft in the clouds of dejection he'll ride,
For he has determined his grace shall be tried.
"He'll cause thee to bring thy griefs to his throne,
But answers of peace to thee shall send none;
Then sorrow and sadness thy heart shall divide,
Because he's determined his grace shall be tried.
"As gold from the flame, he'll bring thee at last,
To praise him for all thro' which thou hast past;
Then love everlasting thy griefs shall repay,
And God from thy eyes wipe all sorrows away."
"How safe the state of God's elect!
Taught, by JEHOVAH to expect
The glory He prepares;
In Christ they live, in Him they die,
And harps, and crowns, and bliss on high,
Shall be for ever theirs.
"This is their long-expected end,
The king of terrors is their friend,
For Christ remov'd his sting.
Deliver'd from this vale of tears,
Rais'd up where Christ Himself appears,
They shall in glory sing.
"The Church laments a brother gone,
While he appears before the throne,
Made white by precious blood:
No more by sin and sorrow pain'd,
All he expected here is gain'd
In glory with his God.
"By faith we would his mansion view,
And still our heaven-bound course pursue,
In spite of earth and hell:
Expecting to be welcom'd home,
Where sins and foes can never come,
And there in glory dwell."
"HOW happy are we our election who see,
And venture, O Lord, for salvation on thee!
In Jesus approved, eternally loved,
Upheld by his power, we cannot be moved.
"'Tis sweet to recline on the bosom divine,
And experience the comforts peculiar to thine;
While, born from above, & upheld by thy love,
With singing and triumph to Zion we move!
"Our seeking thy face was all of thy grace;
Thy mercy demands and shall have all the praise.
No sinner can be beforehand with thee;
Thy grace is eternal, almighty, and free!
"Our Saviour and Friend, his love shall extend;
It knew no beginning, and never shall end!
Whom once he receives, his Spirit ne'er leaves,
Nor ever repents of the grace that he gives.
"This proof we would give that thee we receive,
Thou art precious alone to the souls that believe;
Be precious to us; all beside is as dross,
Compared with thy love & the blood of thy cross.
"Through mercy we taste the invisible feast,
The bread of the kingdom, the wine of the blest!
Who grants us to know his drawings below
Will endless salvation and glory bestow."
"Awake, sweet gratitude, and sing
The ascended Saviour's love;
Sing how He lives to carry on
His people's cause above.
"With cries and tears He offer'd up
His humble suit below;
But with authority He asks,
Enthroned in glory now.
"For all that come to God by Him,
Salvation He demands;
Points to their names upon His breast,
And spreads His wounded hands.
"Eternal life at His request,
To every saint is given;
Safety on earth, and, after death,
The plenitude of heaven."
"Aspire, my soul, to yonder throne.
Where sits the Infinite Unknown,
The self-existent God;
Whose being, no beginning knows,
While matchless splendour round Him flows,
And all things wait His nod.
"'Tis His to fill immensity;
No object can escape His eye,
Nor thought His mind elude;
All things were by His wisdom plann'd;
All are supported by His hand;
And all at once are viewed.
"Justice and mercy, truth and love,
Shine from His glorious throne above,
As Israel's covenant God;
In Persons Three--in essence One--
He is the Sovereign LORD alone,
And be His name adored.
"With Him is no futurity;
He stands enwrapp'd in purity;
Unchangeably The Same:
The Great First Cause of all events,
He gives decrees, and ne'er repents
And HOLY is His name."
"FREE grace from God the Father flows,
To save the multitude He chose;
Accepts, forgives, and justifies,
Renews, preserves, and glorifies.
"Free grace is seen in God the Son--
He makes His Church's cause His own;
Takes all her guilt, His merit gives,
By Him, in Him, with Him she lives.
"Free grace, by God the Holy Ghost,
Regenerates the ransom'd host;
Finds out and conquers God's elect,
And will to endless life protect."
"All fulness dwells in Thee, Lord.
Thy rich and glorious grace
Thou hast bestowed on me, Lord,
A sinner vile and base.
All fulness of affection
Thou hast so sweetly shown.
For sovereign, free election
Has made me Thine alone.
"Before the world's foundation
In Thee we were complete;
Thy wondrous incarnation
Secured all hell's defeat.
In spite of all our failing,
In Thee we firmly stood;
Hell's craft is unavailing
Through Thy most precious blood.
"Thy Spirit, Lord, hath taught us
How glorious is Thy grace,
How Thou in love hast brought us
To see Thee face to face.
In our predestined station
We praise and bless Thy name,
Thou God of our salvation.
Thou glorious, great I AM.
"Jesus, Thou King of glory,
We soon shall dwell with Thee,
And sing the wondrous story
Of grace so full, so free!
Fulness of grace from Thee, Lord.
Comes shining from above,
And draws our heart to see, Lord.
The fulness of Thy love."
"ALL the elected train
Were chosen in their Head,
To all eternal good,
Before the worlds were made;
Chosen to know the Prince of Peace,
And taste the riches of his grace.
"Chosen to faith and hope,
To purity and love,
To all the life of God,
To all the things above;
Chosen to prove salvation sure;
Chosen to reign for evermore.
"Nothing but grace appears
In this eternal choice;
It charms the humble saint,
And makes the soul rejoice;
Its endless glories shine so bright,
It makes obedience all delight.
"Now, Lord, to us reveal
The all-confirming grace;
And may we all pursue
The shining paths of peace;
Run in the way to joys above,
And ever sing electing love."
"WHATSOEVER prompts the soul to pride,
Or gives us room to boast,
Except in Jesus crucified,
Is not the Holy Ghost.
"That blessed Spirit omits to speak
Of what himself has done,
And bids the enlightened sinner seek
Salvation in the Son.
"He never moves a man to say,
"Thank God, I'm made so good"
But turns his eye another way,
To Jesus and his blood.
"Great are the graces he confers,
But all in Jesus' name;
He gladly dictates, gladly hears,
"Salvation to the Lamb."
"Thrice happy souls, in Jesus found,
And freely justified:
They shall with endless life be crown'd,
By him they crucified.
"The law on them has no demand,
Yet they its precepts love;
For justified by grace, they stand,
And wait for joys above.
"No condemnation is proclaim'd
Against this chosen race:
Nor shall they ever be asham'd
Before Jehovah's face.
"They, by the Holy Spirit taught,
Both live and walk by faith;
Till home to glory they are brought,
As God's won promise saith.
"Nor curse, nor wrath, nor death, nor hell,
Can their blest souls destroy:
With Christ, their Surety, they shall dwell
In everlasting joy."
"What condescending love!
Jehovah dwells with man;
Reveals His glories from above,
And shows His gospel plan.
"His tabernacle stands
A witness for His name;
Here praying souls lift up their hands,
And Jesus' love proclaim.
"Here will Jehovah dwell,
To manifest His grace;
Here will He rescue souls from hell,
And they shall see His face.
"The altar, and the priest,
The off'ring, and the fire;
The Paschal Lamb, the gospel feast,
What more can we desire?
"Here, then, may I abide,
And meet Jehovah here;
Gaze on my Saviour's wounded side,
Adore, and love, and fear."
"WHAT makes mistaken men afraid
Of sovereign grace to preach!
The reason is, if truth be said,
Because they are so rich.
"Why so offensive in their eyes
Does God's election seem?
Because they think themselves so wise
That they have chosen him.
Of perseverance why so loath
Are some to speak or hear?
Because, as masters over sloth,
They vow to persevere.
"Whence is imputed righteousness
A point so little known?
Because men think they all possess
Some righteousness their own.
"Not so the needy, helpless soul,
Prefers his humble prayer;
He looks to him that works the whole,
And seeks his treasure there.
"His language is, "Let me, my God,
On sovereign grace rely;
And own 'tis free, because bestowed
On one so vile as I.
"Election! 'tis a word divine;
For, Lord, I plainly see,
Had not thy choice prevented mine,
I ne'er had chosen thee.
""For perseverance strength I've none,
But would on this depend--
That Jesus, having loved his own,
Will love them to the end.
"Empty and bare, I come to thee
For righteousness divine;
O may thy matchless merits be,
By imputation, mine.
"Thus differ these; yet hoping each
To make salvation sure.
Now most men will approve the rich,
But Christ has blessed the poor."
"Come Ye That Love the Savior's Name
And joy to make it known;
The sov'reign of your heart proclaim,
And bow before His throne.
"Behold your King, your Savior, crowned
With glories all devine;
And tell the wand'ring nations round
How bright those glories shine.
"Infinite pow'r and boundless grace
In Him unite their rays;
You, that have e'er beheld His face,
Can you forbear his praise?
"When in His earthly courts we view
The glories of our King,
We long to love as angels do,
And wish like them to sing.
"And shall we long and wish in vain?
Lord, teach our songs to rise;
Thy love can animate the strain,
And bid it reach the skies.
"O happy period! Glorious day!
When heav'n and earth shall raise,
With all their pow'rs the raptured lay,
To celebrate thy praise."
"CHRIST is the eternal Rock,
On which His church is built;
The Shepherd of His little flock;
The Lamb that took our guilt;
Our Counsellor, our Guide,
Our Brother, and our Friend;
The Bridegroom of His chosen bride,
Who loves her to the end.
"He is the Son to free;
The Bishop He to bless;
The full Propitiation He;
The Lord our Righteousness;
His body's glorious Head;
Our Advocate that pleads;
Our Priest that prayed, atoned, and bled,
And ever intercedes.
"Let all obedient souls
Their grateful tribute bring;
Submit to Jesus' righteous rules,
And bow before their King;
Our Prophet Christ, expounds
His and our Father's will;
This good Physician cures our wounds,
With tenderness and skill.
"When sin had sadly made
'Twixt wrath and mercy strife;
Our dear Redeemer dearly paid
Our ransom with His life;
Faith gives the full release;
Our Surety for us stood;
The Mediator made the peace,
And signed it with His blood.
"Soldiers, your Captain own;
Domestics, serve your Lord;
Sinners, the Saviour's love make known;
Saints, hymn the Incarnate Word;
The Witness, sure and true,
Of God's goodwill to men;
The Alpha and the Omega too;
The first and last Amen.
"Poor pilgrims shall not stray,
Who frighted flee from wrath;
A bleeding Jesus is the Way,
And blood tracks all the path;
Christians in Christ obtain
The Truth that can't deceive;
And never shall they die again,
Who in the Life believe."
"THE gospel brings tidings to each wounded soul,
That Jesus the Saviour can make it quite whole;
And what makes this gospel most precious to me,
It holds forth salvation so perfectly free!
"The gospel declares that God, sending his Son
To die for poor sinners, gave all things in one;
This, too, makes the gospel most precious to me;
Because 'tis a gospel as full as 'tis free!
"Since Jesus has saved me, and that freely too,
I fain would in all things my gratitude show;
But as to man's merit, 'tis hateful to me!
The gospel-I love it; 'tis perfectly free!"
"OUR Jesus loves his dear elect;
With glory they shall all be decked
Before his Father's face.
Not one of them for whom he bled,
But shall with joy behold their Head,
In heaven their dwelling-place.
"They are the travail of his soul;
His sweetest thoughts on them did roll
From all eternity.
And, as the jewels of his crown,
He'll give them honour peace, renown,
And full felicity.
"Their sins upon him all were laid,
And he the dreadful debt has paid,
(A debt no more to pay;)
Their Surety in their law-place stood,
Appeased stern Justice with his blood,
And bore their sins away."
