REPENTANCE

by EDWARD CARR

There is a great distinction between the legal repentance which worketh death, and that evangelical repentance, which consists in a godly sorrow for sin, and tendeth to life. True spiritual Repentance has the following marks:

1. A Sense of Sin, produced by the application of the Law, for only by the Law is the knowledge of sin, (Rom. 7:7) inasmuch as "sin is the transgression of the law." (1 John 3:4) Guiltiness felt, and the consciousness of being obnoxious to punishment is followed by:

2. Sorrow for Sin, as its misery is revealed by the Holy Spirit in the light of Christ's sufferings. The soul looks on Jesus, Whom he hath pierced, and mourns; (Zech. 12:10) so that the heart-felt grief which distresses the mind is for sin as the dreadful thing which wounded and slew the Son of God; and this produces:

3. A Hatred of Sin, as its malignity and vileness becomes more and more known, under the teaching of the convincing Spirit. A real hatred to Sin is one precious effect of the application of the Blood of Atonement to the conscience. The next step in the Pathway of Penitence is:

4. Confession of Sin unto God, hiding nothing, extenuating nothing, but seeking for remission and cleansing at the Hands of Him who delights in pardoning iniquity. The true confession is followed by:

5. A Forsaking of Sin. Indeed, Repentance is the act of the Soul turning from Sin to the Saviour, relying on the promise, "Sin shall not have dominion over you." (Rom. 6:14)
